Winter is the perfect time to head to the mountains with the family, and Mallnitz has everything you need. Whether or not you want to hit the slopes, it’s a winter experience for the whole family. Winter hikes, sledding, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, or snowboarding—or simply enjoying the sunshine and the tranquility of the snow. From Mallnbach Apartments, you can reach all the winter hotspots within a 10- to 50-minute drive.

 

The village’s ski area, the Ankogel, is a quiet, small but charming resort with guaranteed snow—ideal for families and beginners, yet challenging enough for more experienced skiers thanks to the longest ski run in all of Carinthia (1,349 meters in elevation).

About a 20-minute drive away lies the Mölltaler Glacier (3,122 m), where, thanks to the altitude, you can ski for up to about eight months a year. Blue, red, and black runs alternate against a fantastic mountain panorama—both ski areas are accessible with a single ski pass (Gopass).​

 

Prefer a large ski area? Then discover Ski Amadé from Bad Gastein. You’ll be in the gondola within 20 minutes. How? By train from Mallnitz-Obervellach, the station located 500 meters from Mallnbach Apartments. Want a vacation away from the crowds, yet still want to enjoy the crowds and the kilometers of slopes? You can do just that, hassle-free.​

Cross-country skiing has become increasingly popular in recent years, and Mallnitz, with its trails, is one of the most beautiful cross-country skiing destinations in Carinthia.

The trails in and around the village are approximately 25 kilometers long and take cross-country skiers to some of the most beautiful spots and views in the area. The trails start right in the center of the village, near a large parking lot—so you can park your car easily and be on the trail within a few minutes.

Ski touring / freeriding is becoming more popular by the day.

No lifts—just ski uphill, then descend through powder snow (or on the slopes). There are plenty of ski touring routes in Mallnitz and the surrounding area. Don’t have any gear? At Wolliger Sports—the go-to sports store in our village—you can rent your gear quickly and easily.

 

Away from the crowds, out in nature. That’s exactly why ski touring and freeriding are becoming increasingly popular.

In a winter wonderland, gliding downhill on a sled, the wind in your face, snow flurries flying around you. You can experience this on the longest illuminated natural toboggan run in Carinthia. And it’s located—that’s right—in Mallnitz. In the fairytale-like Tauerntal valley, the starting point is at the Stöckerhütte Mallnitz.

Walk or take a minibus up the winding road to the spot where you can hop on your sled. Pull your hat down tight, tighten your snow boots a bit more, wrap your scarf extra snugly around your neck, get into the right position, and a little push is all it takes to glide down the hill. But, of course, once is never enough... So, one more time! And at the end of the ride, a delicious hot chocolate at the Stöckerhütte and a plate of regional cuisine, with the adrenaline still racing through your veins. That’s pure enjoyment with a capital E.

In addition to this toboggan run, you can also go sledding at Camping HOCHoben in Mallnitz. With a day pass for the conveyor belt, you’ll glide quickly down the hill and be easily transported back to the top. You can warm up in the campground’s cozy restaurant or on their sunny winter terrace. With the Alpine Pearls benefits, you pay just €5 per person for a day pass. 

Hiking, but with a twist. With snowshoes on your feet, you can reach places you wouldn’t normally get to.  The crunch of fresh snow under your “shoes” without sinking deep into it. Following the tracks of the many wild animals that live in and around Mallnitz.

Away from the crowds, out in nature, surrounded by the silence of the snow or the gentle sound of the babbling river. Bring a picnic to enjoy in that beautiful spot where the winter sun shines so nicely. It’s a real adventure for young and old alike.

In winter, you can join an organized snowshoe hike twice a week, led by a national park ranger. Through the beautiful Seebachtal valley, or higher up around the Jamnig Alm in the Tauerntal valley. No experience is necessary, but it’s recommended that children be at least 8 years old to participate. The hikes with a National Park Ranger are free (Alpine Pearls benefit). 

After an adventurous day in the snow, it’s especially nice to relax. You can do just that at the Tauernbad Mallnitz, a small but lovely swimming pool that includes sauna facilities. With the National Park guest card, you’ll receive a discount on admission.

Looking for a large thermal spa? That’s also an option: the Felsen Therme in Bad Gastein. It’s another 12-minute train ride, and via a covered walkway, you can get from the train to the spa in just 3 minutes. Through the ÖBB, you can purchase a combo ticket that includes both train and sauna access.
